Trying to plan a trip for late February. There will be about 10 people with me. I would prefer a cabin in the mountains.
I know almost nothing about Colorado so any advice is helpful

a few questions....
- what is the experience level of most folks in your group?
- how formal is your group?...that is, would they be more comfortable around movie stars or in a laid back western town?
- how much are you wanting to spend?

All beginners
Not formal. More laid back. Just looking for a relaxing time
500$ per person for lodging for about 5-6 nights. Skiing/food/flights are all going to be separate.

I would recommend Steamboat Springs...basically an old ranching town that built a ski hill. It has the best of both worlds....skiing and all of the things that come with that (hotels, shops, resturants, etc.) yet they have managed to keep the small, town feel alive. they have a professional rodeo every night during the summer!
I lived for several years in Colorado and Steamboat is still my favorite place to visit.

I was looking at steamboat. What airport should we fly into?

I'll throw out Winter Park.
Great skiing. Great atmosphere in the town.
Shuttle service if you don't stay at the resort.
The skiing can be done fairly cheap if you plan ahead.

Winter Park
I've been there twice, and have nothing else to compare it to, but both times I was pleased with the trip. Very cost effective for the skiing, and the rest of the activities and attractions were great as well.

There's an airport in steamboat (HDN), close airports are Vail (EGE) at 61 miles, Aspen (ASE) at 90 miles, Grand Junction (GJT) at 110 miles, or Denver (DEN) at 143 miles. I'd suggest HDN or Vail. You may have to pay for it in price, but it'll save you a few hours of flying into/out of Denver. Plus there's usually flights through Houston and Dallas nonstop to Hayden and Vail during the winter

Steamboat is a solid choice. You could look to stay in Summit County, that would open up some choices for cabin/houses and you have Breck/Keystone.
If I was going to Colorado, I would do Crested Butte. It is off the tourist trail and is a great mountain and town.
If I opened my options up, I would go to Heavenly (South Lake Tahoe). Nothing like skiing and Vegas all mixed together.
