Boat trailer carpet. How much do I need

Replacing the (4) 2x4 boards on my boat trailer.
They are 14ft long.
I don't want to completely cover the board with carpet. I want to leave about 2" of the bottom of the boards exposed.
How much carpet do I need?

Square footage will be around 28ft2 but that's a useless number unless you can find a roll that is 6" wide (2" on each side, and 2" on top). I think academy carries rolls 8" and wider, so maybe try online.
Edit: I mentioned getting 6" rolls because cutting carpet straight can be a huge pain in the arse. I did two small bunks recently and generated a lot of waste. The wider sheets I could see being much more trouble than they're worth.

You need enough to cover the boards....
14'X24" if we are on the same page.. Lowes sells quality marine carpet by the foot. It comes 4ft wide I believe, which will be more than you need. Just go buy 14 foot and be done with it

Sounds like you need 8" pieces, 14ft long, times 4.
These posts are making me doubt myself lol. A 2x4 is 1.5x3.5x1.5x3.5 = 10" around. You want to leave off 2", so each board will need 8". So you need 32" wide x 14ft.
Thats about as far as i got in my schoolin.

6" if I'm reading right, he doesn't want to cover the bottom. Roughly 2" across the top and 2" down each side.
But yes, it's still too early in the morning to be doing this.

Can't remember which store - Academy, Lowe's or Home Depot had 6" rolls last time I did mine.
A little glue on the top side, staple gun on the sides - done.
ETA: Academy 8" Bunk Carpet Roll

He's going to have to provide a MS paint drawing.

I found an 8"x12' roll for $8
That'll leave me with a 2" gap at the bottom of the board which is what I was told was best.
I'm buying 5 rolls since the 12' rolls won't cover the 14' boards. I should be ok if I overlap the carpet on the boards closest to the front of the trailer where there's less friction. Then still have enough to cap the ends.
Damn, I hate doing math this early.

What am I missing? If you lay an 8" piece over the top of a 2x4, which is actually 3.5x1.5, it's gonna go almost all the way to the bottom. At best it'll leave you an inch uncovered on either side of the board. Another thing is why do you want the gap anyway? Cost?

I've read that if the board is completely wrapped in carpet that it keeps the wood from drying out as fast, therefore causing the wood to rot quicker.

I could see that happening if the bottom of the board was carpeted. Gravity would pull the water and sit on the bottom.
