Here's your problem. It wasn't "two countries" that "were hell bent on spreading ideology."

Despite what your liberal/socialist high school teachers and college professors may have taught you, it was only one country. And the other country had to take a stand on behalf of freedom and liberty and call an end to all that B.S.

I mean technically that is an ideology

It truly came from a war that left the world in pieces with two big dogs left at the table. One of which was positioned to spread it's government to it's neighboring western countries who were left weakened by the war. It was in Russia's best interest. The base idea of communism isn't necessarily an "evil" concept (albeit a misguided and terrible one). But to make it work, you must have everyone on board (which is pretty much impossible voluntarily).

Look at Berlin for example. On one side of a wall, you can stand in line for bread, on the other, you can work in a free market society and become rich. People will flee to the other side of that wall if allowed. So, your only way to stop that is to make sure the other side of that wall is communist as well (or literally construct a wall that you don't let people escape). So that was Russia's "desire", whether they ever planned to act on it or not. And the US knew that and walked around beating it's chest like a tough guy in a bar, letting them know that if they wanted to start shite, we'd be here.
