I think it goes hand in hand with him finding the love and acceptance he had always so desperately seeked. From his appearance on Fundle Bundle as a kid, he just was someone that struggled to fit in and needed somebody to share happiness with. Holly was his soulmate and brought the best of him out from behind his constant effort to fit in.
