You can't be serious? If my wife and I were the only people to have had this happen you might have a point.
It happens all the time - we were very lucky b/c there haven't been any major, long term health issues. A lot of people never walk away as you well know. Those guys are ticking time bombs and when they go off they could just hurt themselves or many others too. Either way they have no place in society b/c they are a danger to everyone near a road.

And most people don't get hit by drunk drivers. I guess you'd rather people shoot your family and get out in 5 years though.
So this guy becomes institutionalized, doesn't get help for his addictions, and gets out in 20 years and commit a heinous crime that he learned in the penitentiary.
Again, I'm not excusing what he did, but the punishment far outweighs the crime
Eta: Maybe your thoughts behind the judicial and penal systems are the old school bass ackwards ways. It is obviously working so well. Let's just lock up everyone for everything
