30 minutes nonstop crying seems like an eternity. Biggest thing is to make frequent stops, (hard as it might be) and take the kid out the seat for a while. I drive from San Antonio to Lake Charles often, and I hate stopping, but even older kids need to stretch a little.

Yeah it is such a catch-22 though. If they're awake, we'll do that, but if they're sleeping, we will drive until the gas light comes on. Putting a kid back into a car seat after they've stretched out for 15-20 minutes just restarts the clock on the 30 minutes of crying.

In summary, I wouldn't drive longer than 8-9 hours in any day unless you absolutely had to do so, and I wouldn't add any west coast leg to your trip because the consecutive days will be tough for all.
