I will give you Dean Karnazes but I can't find another. Even he is rail thin with very little muscle. Zach bitters sure as hell doesn't have muscle, Scott Jurek sure as hell doesn't, Anton didn't, Indias top runners dont, kenyas either.
Who are these muscular ultra runners? Maybe you and I have a different view of muscular.

I don't know any competitive long distance runners whom run for their body. If anything their body is a necessary sacrifice in order to obtain their true goals.

Max King
Sage Canady
Hal Koener and Tim Olson

Would you say those you posted are exceptions to the norm when it comes to the physique of distance runners?
Posted on 5/3/16 at 10:58 am to mouton
not really
most ultra runners look similar because of the cross training that they also do
I'll give you road marathoners often look pretty sickly though

What type of cross training to they do? I figured they would have to do some other types of training to be able to take the physical demands of 90 plus mile races.

I honestly have never seen anything but the road guys in real life. Didn't even know the ultra runners doing the trail running stuff even existed until you brought it up and I googled. Im sure its popular up there were you are, but never seen it in LA.
and Ill give you they don't look skinny fat. But like I said, never seen those types of guys down here. Guess with the flat land the way it is here, most are road guys.

wait what? 90 mile race?!!!! WTF why would somebody want to do this to themselves??? Jesus christ that sounds absolutely horrible.

workouts typical to sprinters, rock climbing, mountain biking, skimo, etc

ultra races are typically 50k, 50 miles, 100k, or 100 miles
some are longer
and most are in the mountains
but yeah...such pussies

I live in LA
and yes, there are ultra trail races here as well

well i did say it was only true in most cases, not all. Certainly not pussies and to me would rank up there with the ironman event.
I have no interest but I have major respect for those that do this. I don't understand it other than the competition but I respect the shite out of it.

I thought you were in Oregon. and were the hell do they run trail races at down here? through the marsh? I mean I get there are woods here as I grew up in them, just doesn't seem very popular here, but I very well could be wrong.
I know in the SWLA alot of people are into the biking. Is the ultra races a BR/NOlA thing?

You should check out the documentary on one of the ultra marathons considered the toughest in the world. It is on either Hulu or Netflix.

quote:we need to get this man into a lab and study the shite out of that metabolism. he somehow is getting 3x's more energy out of a single calorie than any other living organism on the planet.
Mr. Cahill was one of the worst off. As he regained more than 100 pounds, his metabolism slowed so much that, just to maintain his current weight of 295 pounds, he now has to eat 800 calories a day less than a typical man his size. Anything more turns to fat.
we could solve the worlds energy crisis with this type of breakthrough.

Florida parishes have hills and trails
Kisatchie, state parks, etc
we don't have long trails, so we have to a lot of loops to make the distances

its not near as popular as in the western states, but its growing

most of the runners you see are like me and just do it for exercise. Maybe run a half or full every now and then.
Most people just aren't in great shape, no matter what your preferred work out is.
