Small banks and big banks are two distinct product sets. It just depends on if you want to be a big fish in a little pond or have a badass app so you don't have to talk to some dense salesman posing as a banker.

I want a relationship. I have that. If I need a loan, I don't want to talk to 6 different people, I want to make a call, have the money transferred to my account, and let the paperwork catch up.
Having said this, I use two online brokers, and one full service adviser. There are disadvantages to both.
My point is automation more than national versus community bank. And if I pay 3.25 for a signature loan at a community bank, and that is .12 higher than Bank of America could do it for, that's the price I pay for an ongoing business relationship.
