The thing about the Rothko paintings is there's actually a ton of under painting that doesn't show up on photographs. You actually have to sit in front of one for a few minutes before your eyes adjust to see the other colors painted underneath.

That's why they usually have benches in front so you can sit and let your eyes adjust. Idk about being "moved emotionally" but his paintings are far from just solid squares.

Right. That's what I've read but I haven't seen one.

I try not to dismiss things I haven't experienced personally or don't understand.

Sometimes works of art have to be put into context.
