Historical fiction: Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series or Warlord series. Both set in dark age Britain.
History:
I recently enjoyed Zealot by Reza Aslan it's a study of the historical Jesus. Very easy read.
Rodney Stark has a couple good history books I've recently read. One is on the crusades (Gods Batallions) and the other is How the West Won. He has a very unapologetically non-PC viewpoint that often results in differences from mainstream historians.
Lost to the West (forget the author) is an incredibly smooth read on the Byzantine empire. Informative without being dry.
