It's for travel reasons as a lot of people on this thread have been saying. Almost all weekday afternoon games occur on the last game of a series. The only exception to the rule are the Cubs with their Friday afternoon day games. You can't expect players to fly from Pittsburgh to San Francisco overnight and play a game the next day. They would only get four or five hours of sleep.
