well even if the cops killed the people, they can still get convictions if they prove that the police reaction was due to illegal behavior of the bikers. on a much more simple example, if you rob a bank and somebody involved gets killed, you can get a capital murder charge even if you didn't kill them

You're right.

But from what little is known of what went down, it looks like this situation is a bit more complicated. Yes there was a fight that broke out (and according to some this fight was orchestrated by CI's but that's another story). But it also appears that when this fight broke out the cops who were already in position and had the area surrounded, all opened fire at the crowd outside and shot people indiscriminately. Then when it was over they simply arrested everyone there irregardless if they had anything to do with the fight or not.
