Both came out of the same scene. One a wasted life, the other relatively well adjusted and just an all around cool guy. What happened?

He accomplished a lot in 27 years, wasn't too wasted. I still look at Dave as "the drummer for nirvana". May have came from the same scene, but he lived a totally different lifestyle.

Not really. Grohl is from Ohio and played in Scream out of Washington D.C.
He operated in the Seattle grunge scene for only about three years.

Cobain was 100x the songwriter and musician that Grohl will be ever be. Cobain was probably a better drummer too.
