Do you need a new gas line?

Maybe thats part of the cost.

They will have to run a line from one end to the other through the attic. This company is a one stop shop. They do all of the work, permits, etc

Standby generators also need a transfer switch - I presume OP's quote included one, but some of the internet ads don't include this (and they're not cheap).

OP never said what brand he was quoted. The "good" ones will cost more than the Generacs. I have Kohler air cooled - had it for 8-9 years. I'll never go back to the portable/backfeed/extension cord stuff.

When our power goes out (maybe 6 times a year - longest period was 8 days after Gustav), my power comes on in ~ 10 seconds.
