setting up and maintaining a tank is expensive, but it isn't $5-10k expensive.

That would be one hell of a setup to cross the $5k barrier. I have around $3k in mine before fish. 125 gallon reef tank on custom stand with custom hood. LED lighting with timers, 30 gallon sump and protein skimmer. I do think i need more lighting as i have had allot of trouble keeping corals alive.

I have about $1500-$2000 in my 100 gallon before fish.

- 8 Light T5 fixture (may switch over to LEDs eventually)
- ~85lbs live rock
- 30ish gallon sump setup
- stand and canopy lid
- RO/DI fitler setup + salt mix

I've issed a few water changes so I have some algae blooming, but other than that the tank pretty much takes care of itself after a year or so.

My background is a 180g fish only and a 25g reef tank. I had the FOWLR running for about 4yrs and the reef about 18months

I guess 2K is doable with a lot of used equipment and very little livestock.

But just to throw some numbers out..

$600 75g tank
500-1K in led lights
500 in-tank pumps (2 mp40 $800+)
400 skimmer
200 return pump
200 used sump
300 stand
200 dry rock
$$ dosing equipment+test kits
200 cheap DI water unit
$$$ livestock.

Prices can vary greatly on budget. It is very easy to go overboard.

LiveAqua.com is a cool site for livestock.
