The better comparison would be to a guy like Reggie Miller who could shoot the hell out of it. What could he have done in today's game?

Something tells me he'd be no better now than he was then, but who knows.

he's not the only guy who's ever lived who could shoot the ball. He's just the first REALLY frickING AWESOME shooter who has been given the absolute green light to launch it at any time. He's got the luxury of being the gunner on what looks so much like Paul Westhead's Loyola-Marymount's system it's scary

I understand your point, but you're beginning to make Steph sound like a pure volume shooter - an accumulator. He is on pace for the 4th highest eFG% of any non-center in history, and the highest of any non-center with over 15% usage rate ever.

He is an absurd shooter and the fact that his numbers beat that out even at his usage is incredible.

Food for thought: The difference between Curry's PER this year of 32.9 and the current highest PER of all-time - 31.82 by Wilt in 1962-1963 - is the same gap between Wilt and the 14th best season of all time.

My only point in suggesting it's not such a closed case it thinking of me re-watching a 1988 playoff game a week or so ago on NBA Classics between the Bulls and Celtics. By 1988, Jordan was really beginning to have an impact on the league, though had not yet won anything team oriented...but his style was already beginning to be emulated by younger guys a few years below. This was a first round game I think where Jordan went for 55 or something, but the Celtics won. It was a great contrast between what was versus what would become. Jordan was already playing a different game...he was faster, more athletic, it simply looked different than everyone else. But...it made me think back to guys like Dr. J who also looked to be playing a different game when they played.

Jordan was a better overall player, but his game was born from watching Dr. J. And yet, it would have been foolish to suggest that Dr. J could not have played in the 90's. His skill set and athleticism would have evolved to match the current game. He likely would have taken the things he was good at and if they fit better with the game of the late 80's and 90's, he'd have been even better.

I think that's an argument that I'd make for Miller. Had he played today, he'd have been in the same Steph role. Would he have shot any higher percentage? It's really impossible to say, but I'd argue that when something becomes more of a phase of the game guys tend to get better at it. Or, in the case of free throws, worse at it as they quit bothering to be any good at it.

And keep in mind, I never liked Miller...so I'm not knighting for the guy.

Not my intent at all. Honestly...I've missed the absolute frick out of basketball, so I'm really incredibly pleased that Curry has broken out with style that so perfectly fits with some of the stuff I truly enjoy about the game. Frankly, it was one of the things which LeBron (not to make it about that guy) never did for me. As good as he is, I just never enjoyed watching his game. But Steph is different, and his style and the way he seems to be dragging the NBA with him has been contagious to watch.

As with most things, I tend to want to tap the breaks a bit with hyperbole when anyone starts anointing anyone the new Greatest. And I thought comparing him to Jordan, especially in regards to threes, was kind of disingenuous...like someone said it would be like comparing the number of dunks they each had. Great case of apples and oranges.

I'm content to watch the guy tear it up and see where it goes...because so far it's be a fricking blast.
