Oh shite. It's literally the worst large town/small city in Alaska. It's a depressing place, a native hub on the Kuskokwim River and they do not like white people.

I'd move to Idaho before I'd live in Bethel long term. I could probably survive two months. It's the worst place to get your introduction to Alaska.

yeah I know I will not be staying there permanently, but there is a USFW outpost out there, and apparently the guy who I need to train under lives out there

ETA: I would travel out that way frequently, but live in Anchorage

ETA: Oh jeez, yeah that place is crazy...see people call it Beth-Hell...I wonder how they people over there at the USFW post deal with it all

It's flat tundra, 65% native and expensive. It might be fun for a week or so, but I couldn't live there permanently. Just pray you don't get a transfer out there. I imagine though you wouldn't be stuck in town all the time though.

Hell, you might like it. I know people that live there and love it so you never know. I talked to a guy who was in charge of the Visitors Bureau there once, a guy from Alabama and he was in culture shock....

You'll get a quick introduction into native culture, particularly Yup'ik culture. They're living in two worlds, it's kind of fascinating if you can deal with the bullshite.

The town recently repealed some liquor prohibitions, so you'll have that going for you. The natives can't handle booze at all.
