so what's the ghetto like up there?

I'm guessing it's not as bad as New Orleans

It's not.

Though the most diverse neighborhood in the USA is in Anchorage, Mountain Side. Mountain Side is also the high crime area in Anchorage.

Not really. As an outsider, you're generally safe. Most violence is domestic as Natives still live in two worlds and women aren't treated very well. I've spent time in a few and never felt unsafe, though did feel somewhat unwelcome at times.

The village is avoidable for most people though.

I'm sure I'll understand this pretty quickly since I will be working with them frequently.

Hopefully I can get on their good side...my boss seems to think I would

I find them to be good people if you'll just listen to them. Respect the elders, listen to the people and you'll be fine. It does take time to prove yourself to the elders though.

Most? Probably white. Proportionately? Probably natives and Polynesians. Violent crime is easily avoided in Anchorage though. It's fairly restricted to specific areas.

I walked around downtown in the late hours smoking a J several times and it was like I was walking around Portland or Seattle.

Ok, you'll want to check out Chilkoot Charlies. They have a cool concept. Many different rooms with different styles of music including live music.

Some parts of the Valley, outside of Wasilla are kind of sketchy too. It's been cleaned up a lot but used to be a lot of outlaws out there. Wasilla and Palmer are so different, yet so close together.

Anchorage has a lot going for it for a city it's size. Lots of restaurants, concerts, stuff like that. They'll also probably be one of the favorites for the 2026 winter olympics

yes! These are somethings I'd like to know as well.

I'm heading up with no wife/gf with my cattle dog and cat.

Outside of outdoorsy stuff, I am definitely going to being hitting the bars and trying to meet some people

Koots has been around a long time. Place was popping every time I've been. I watched the LSU game at The New Peanut farm. Typical decent food and lots of tv's, website says 70. Very clean and a lot of good beers on tap.

Yeah, Koots is an Anchorage staple. Last time I was there, I got lost, I think...

Bear Tooth theater/pub is pretty cool. Food and booze while you watch a movie.

Humpies is a decent place. I haven't eaten there in a long time but they had some interesting menu items and lots of different beers.

I lived and worked in Bethel as a bush pilot back in 94-95. Was a pretty shitty place back then, but I enjoyed my experiences there. I've been to all of the villages on YK Delta Rog was talking about. The natives are really cool people. They're soft spoken, modest and friendly. Very resilient and tough people.

And yeah, definitely check out Chilcoot Charlie's and the Alaskan Bush Company.

Good luck.
