I thought for sure Gregory would win there
Gregory sucks. Look at his finishes in the A-10 his last 6 years. One 2nd place, and everything else was 7th or worse. Georgia Tech did Dayton a huge favor taking him off their hands.

So how do you explain Stanford's success?
A big difference between a school like Stanford and Tech are the type and amount of degrees offered. GT does not offer a Bachelor of Arts. Everything is a Bachelor of Science, including the few "Liberal Arts" degrees we have. There's no education major, no african american studies, art practice offerings.
Stanford isn't some traditional powerhouse either. They've got some good momentum going right now though.
Another major issue GT faces is the Hill (Admissions) only allows 2 or 3 exemptions to football players that don't meet the minimum entrance requirements at GT. I doubt schools like Bama or UGA even have a minimum. And O'Leary was not significantly more successful than PJ has been. In O'Leary's time the Hill was actually allowing him more exemptions than they do now. He's actually one of the reasons they tightened it up. Players were struggling with the curriculum.
The powers at GT have made it clear they will not sacrifice academics for athletics. I like CPJ for our football program. I hate Gregory, he is terrible. Our basketball program has been a huge disappointment the last several years. I do believe we should be competing in the NCAA tournament every year.

standford has plenty of blow off majors and it's one of those places where you pass if you make it onto campus and show up
it doesn't have nearly teh same sort of academic requirements as GT
stanford is like harvard. the hard part is getting in and then you're set

I don't know for sure but I would imagine schools like UNC, UVA, and Stanford have more humanities classes offered than a school like Georgia Tech. But I'm ignorant as to what they offer.
