I was Navy...and SH60B's are almost all gone now...but Navy helicopter pilots have a pretty good life...H60's in the Navy are very much about vertical replenishment, reconnaissance, extending the ship's radar capability, counter drug ops, etc. When I was involved, some of what we did was target suspected smuggling assets in and around areas where there was a threat...they also do some search and rescue...but in a different capacity than the coast guard...it's a pretty cool gig...I was a maintainer and technician...electrical and power plants

That sounds cool. And of course I'd be proud as hell of my son for becoming a helicopter pilot, no matter which branch... even the Navy .

Still, for the sake of my wife's nerves and my nerves, I'd sleep a lot sounder at night knowing he was in the rear with the gear at a nice, safe, cushy, well paying job that does not require him to take a 10,000 lb piece of aluminum and beat the air into submission at almost 20,000 feet.

My Dad was the first Marine graduate of their helicopter flight school in Florida. He tells stories about plucking downed pilots out of North Korea during the Korean War.

well its heavier and doesn't fly that high...but I get your point...but I would be more worried if he was a Marine pilot...not trying to be offensive or out of line but those guys seem to have a lot of "training" missions go bad...I don't remember the last time the Navy put an H60 in the drink...just saying....tell him to do good in school...
