2003 - One loss LSU was ranked 3rd going into the SECCG where they spanked the #5 team. All said and done, LSU moved up ONE spot to #2. The talk was "should It be OU or should it be USC"? No one EVER debated whether it should be LSU.

2007 - LSU was ranked #7 going into the SECCG. #1 lost, #2 lost, LSU flat jumped #4, #5, and #6...with 2 losses no less.

Say what you want about the football gods in '03, but LSU straight miracled their way...walking backwards with their asses STRAIGHT out...into the BCSNC game.

The jumping part is accurate, but calling it a miracle isn't I don;t think. In any other year, LSU doesn't jump anyone there, but what made that leap possible was that Virginia Tech was in front of LSU, having lost their second game before LSU lost theirs... After Championship Weekend and teams who lost in the final week were moved down, pollsters were left with a situation they had to address...namely VT being ahead of LSU after being curb-stomped head-to-head by LSU earlier in the year.

For once, and honestly one of the only times up to that point the pollsters actually got this point correct, they stepped back and took a look at the totality of the season rather than "who lost last" and realized there was no good way they could allow a VT team that got blasted by LSU to remain in front of them. And if you recall, there was a very loud voice talking up this jump as soon as it became obvious...Kirk Herbstreit. He was on board with moving LSU up over VT as soon as the games ended that Saturday night. Have to give the guy credit where it's due...

And the rest was history...

While it's certainly true that had LSU taken care of business against an OK UK team on the road and a shitty AKRY team at home (both times while holding the #1 ranking) it would have never come to that, but in the end the BCS got that one correct. And once there, showed why they had been the best team all year.
