Some Buddhists believe that this kind of pain is the result of craving and the reaction one has when cravings are not fulfilled.
The only way to avoid the kind of existential pain you are feeling is to completely and finally let go of all desire. It's not very "human," but still the best solution I have heard to deal with this sort of thing if the emotion is too much.
