I guess the Impala is a full size sedan. My mistake.

But within the OP's price range.

For mid sized cars, the Accord and Camry seem to be the favorites....but also consider the Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Chevy Malibu, Kia Optimia, and Hyundai Sonata. This segment is probably the best value and most competitive. I don't think there are bad choices there, but the Accord IMO is the safest option. That doesn't mean I wouldn't buy a Chevrolet or Nissan if the Honda dealers are being jerks.

For Full sized cars, the Chevy Impala and Nissan Maxima are great choices. Both historically sturdy front drive cars with powerful V6 engines. The Avalon is pretty nice too.

For more sporty, albeit smaller cars, the Buick Regal Turbo, Mercedes CLS, Acura TLX, and Volvo S60 are all nice cars. These can be had with powerful four bangers and manual transmissions.

The BMW 3 series, Audi A4, Cadillac ATS, and Mercedes C class might be closer to $40,000 by the time they are reasonably well optioned....they are great cars but they are more expensive.

Get the new Malubu without the badging.

Recently rented a brand new Malibu the week after I rented a 2015 Camry. I think the new Malibu is little better car than the Camry with slightly better interior design and the latest technology, but the front end styling isn't for everyone.

On the other hand, you can get a V6 in the Camry...the Malibu has a turbo 4 cylinder similar to the higher end Sonata, Optima, and Passat.
