It's easy to knock if you haven't spent any time up there. My mother-in-law has lived in Elkins for around 10 years, so I've been there many times. I prefer the Smokies and Blue Ridge, but the Ozarks are also nice.
The downtown area of Fayetteville has some good restaurants, and there are plenty of outdoor activities nearby. I took my sons to Devil's Den State Park and hiked one of the mountain trails a couple of years ago. It was accessible to inexperienced hikers, but quite beautiful.

I can tell you as a college town, it's boring in comparison..I can knock it because I'm routinely in the area monthly over the past five years..good barbecue and the Ozarks are nice...
