Just watched a video on this and the guys tested 71/2 shot all the way to 00buck and the best they found as far as colladeral damage and wall penetration was a #6.
Also if you go the shotgun route only for home defense just get a youth model 20 gauge.

+1 for the youth 20ga with bird shot. I have my old youth 870 loaded up and ready to rock.
