This is very sad news. He was my coach and one of my teachers at one of his many stops.

About 10-12 years ago Coach Garland had his first major heart attack. His close friend, Dr. Billy Cannon, took him to the ER.

Dr. Cannon tells the story that when the doctor came in to examine Coach Garland he asked Coach if he smoked. Garland said, "I used to smoke but I quit."

The doctor asked him, "How long ago did you quit?"

Coach Garland replied, "Oh, about 45 minutes ago."


He was quite a character.
