This makes many of the so called best shows unwatchable to me. The Americans is just 1 example of a show I stopped watching because of this. I understand why otherwise poor shows put it in, for ratings, but if your show is good you don't need it.

It's kind of necessary in the Americans as Philip and Elizabeth use seduction to gain access to secrets or to get closer to someone. They do push the envelope with what they are showing, but I wouldn't say that the general use of sex scenes in the show is gratuitous.

What's interesting is that the sex scenes in American TV is nothing compared to what you find in other parts of the world.

It's also interesting that in the US it is far more acceptable to show blood and guts on prime time TV than hearing cuss words and showing people make love.

The show "Hannibal" blurred the naughty parts of the female form in a Botticelli masterpiece. This whole damn country is upside down.

frankly, I find the amount of unnecessary sex scenes equal to the amount of unnecessary gratuitous violence on most shows. As with sex scenes, if the act(s) are central to the theme, and tastefully done, then I'm ok with it. But most of the time it's only there for shock value. Likewise, they continue to push the envelope with violence. The violence is more disturbing to me than the sex.but overuse of either is annoying and can ruin a show IMO
