Why does anyone think Loomis would discuss the compensation he would want for Payton, with Payton?

I don't think trading a coach is as simple as trading a player. All parties must be happy with the transaction or it'll never happen.

If I'm trading FOR Payton, I need to know a) he's fine with the trade details and b) he's willing to sign an extension with his new team.

If A doesn't happen, then B wouldn't happen, so a team wouldn't even bother.

It's not like a player where he just has to suck up and deal with it. You'd have one disgruntled person running the entire show.

I agree to a point, but all I would think Loomis needs to know is where he would be interested in going. Then the compensation is on him. You certainly don't go that far for a player.

Actually, I think it would be easier. The Saints couldn't care less if Payton would be willing to sign an extension with a new team. The only parties who would have to be happy are the Saints and the team giving them picks. If you are the team acquiring him you are giving him a new contract, not extending the existing contract.
