I wouldn't advise an adult who's never played tennis to join a league. I would recommend taking a few lessons first. A player should at least be able to get a serve in consistently and be able to sustain at least 3 or 4 shot rallies before subjecting their game to others.

I intended the term "league" to be loosely construed. They have tennis meetups for people who are complete beginners Something like that would be a good way to get involved in the game and meet others who like to play. The guy who is a complete beginner won't stay that way if he goes out and hits regularly.
