Any OT'ers into star gazing? It's something that I wanted to get into, any suggestions on a started telescope for looking at the moon and planets (and if it can see nebula that would be amazing). Budget about $1 to 1.5 k.
Most people get a telescope, look at the moon, mars and the rings of Saturn, and maybe find one of the brighter nebula and they are done. To get further into it takes some time studying and planning your observing sessions. The new go-to scope mounts with internal databases take a lot of the effort out of it, but not all. Get a good set of binoculars first, one of the smartphone star finder apps, or a old fashioned star chart, take a look around, and try to learn where things are. If you find yourself then wanting more then get a telescope.
