Pooch kicking

Can anyone here explain the logic behind pooch kicking to the 30 yard line and giving the opposing team great field position? The only thing that I can come up with is to prevent a long return???????? I have never seen another team do it so often.

Didn't want the ball in #11's hands.

Pooch kick is called when you want to keep the ball out of the hands of a dangerous return man, when your coverage team sucks, or both. The very best kickers can kick out of the back of the end zone SOME of the time....but remember....this is a 75 yd kick. Leg fatigue sets in and it is hard to replicate this type of kick throughout a game.
A pooch is preferred sometimes over a squib because a pooch has a little hang time vs a squib, thus allowing coverage team a few steps down field. Additionally, a pooch kick can be targeted to a more specific area than a squib kick. A good kicker can pick a specific up back and pooch it directly to that player.
I thought Cameron did a great job on every pooch that was called last night, and when they let him kick away he did well also.

Kick the ball out the end zone, they get the ball at the 25. With that you take the chance of them getting a great return or even a TD. Pooch it to the 30 eliminates almost any chance of a return and only a 5 yard difference.

I agree with kicking the ball out of the end zone. I'm sure that we can find someone who can do it. We were led to believe that Gamble could kick the ball into the seats on a kickoff. We did the same thing against Florida and almost lost because of it. Way too many studs on this team to give the ball to the opposing team at their 40 yard line.
