I was always under the impression that it was more the great red river raft that allowed backwater to flood what is now the lake (with the man made dam).

The 1811-1812 earthquake caused the jam also. So I guess I can see how people might try to argue that point, but you gotta get down to that root cause. The jam did help hold water in the lake though.
