And Finn sure as hell shouldn't have been able to land a blow on him.
He shouldn't have and probably wouldn't have if Ren was focused, but Ren was out of control and fighting pretty wildly. Not really a stretch IMO

People keep wanting to think that Ren is as polished as Vader was. He's not. He's very far from it at this point.

I don't think that at all. But I have to assume that he's been through years of lightsaber training.
I just think that scene could have been handled better.

I don't really think he has. Seems like his training has been more focused on other things. His own lightsaber isn't nearly as good as Luke's/Vader's.

Who taught Ren lightsaber combat? Luke? Who taught Luke?
Luke's Jedi do not have the benefit of being trained by master swordsman who follow a training regiment perfected over the thousands of years the order had been in existence. The a Jedi of the New Republic era do not have he same level of formal training as the Old Republic Jedi.

once he left being trained by Luke, it is likely he didn't have to fight against others with lightsabers. Could have lost his touch if he ever had it.
Edit: If luke is the only Jedi than there is no chance he would be attacked by anyone that has a light saber.

There are only two things I can think of in the previous 6 movies that were more impressive then stopping and holding that laser blast in place:
Yoda's efforts in the fight with Palpatine and Vader force choking someone through a video screen (can't remember where the guy on the other end was, but he wasn't near Vader that's for damn sure)
What about Anakin falling like 200 feet and grabbing a moving vehicle on Coruscant?
Prequels pretty much made him Superman

sorry to do a callback from page 3 of this thread, but can someone explain these two for me? im drawing a blank
Kylo Ren deciding he didn't need BB88 or Han going light speed through the shield felt very very very forced to me.
Can't remember Han one, but Ren didn't need BB8 because BB8 showed the map to Rey so he could extract it from her.
Or were you looking for why he would do that and not chase the much easier to capture droid?

the whole light speed thing was a way around the shield, it reset but so fast that only things traveling at lightspeed could get through.

I mean before he got all jacked up, he was supposed to be.
Even Palpatine said Vader would become infinitely stronger. By the third prequel Anakin was ridiculously strong.
If he wouldn't have been stupid, he would have certainly killed Obi-Wan, who by all accounts was also strong as hell.

Obi-Wan's reputation was staked on being a master swordsman.

Maz needed more back story
Apparently, there were more Maz scenes, but there were rumors those scenes were cut because JJ wasn't thrilled w/ Lupita Nyong'o's work in the film, or parts of it.
Personally, I really liked Maz's character in the film, hopefully we'll see some additional scenes w/ her within the deleted scenes that'll be available when the movie comes out on DVD/BR.

I liked her personality but thought she looked like cheap CGI

Should have either made her human, or dressed her up as another species. CGI was a bad choice.

The CGI is fine. Damn some of you people are obsessed over no CGI in a Star Wars film

I agree, her personality was great, made you want to know more about her character. Not a fan of CGI, would have preferred a puppet like they did w/ Yoda back in the 80's.

I don't mind some CGI, but the only reason she was CGI was so that she could be tiny. There was no reason for that.
Hell, they didn't even make the guy that Rey sold parts to CGI.

And he got owned by Dooku multiple times. Sure Anakin did when he was young but he handled him super easily in Episode III once he got angry.
Plus Anakin could go double saber. Wish we would have seen that more honestly.
The way I understand it is if not for Anakin's stupidity and cockiness, he would have handled Obi-Wan. But you can what if until the end of the world I suppose.
