I have had a small chest freezer in the garage for 14 years with no issue. I now have had a fridge next to it for about 2 years with no issue.

You can freeze a thing of water and then place an object on top of the frozen water. If you open the lid and the object has dropped down and refroze in the ice then you know at sometime you defrosted enough for there to be an issue with the food
