Like others have said, they will be by almost any house you buy. Don't let it detour you from the house. Over time they may get pushed from their habitat has you encroach on it.
I live on the edge of the swamp and don't see them as regularly as you would think. I kill one a year as my dog has gotten bit once a year since I've lived here. I'll admit that it is now on my mind when cutting the brush around the ditch or when the rain water backs into the yard. They wouldn't stop me from buying my house. I don't have any advice on how to combat them besides my method of a shovel or shot gun.
