We have a drainage ditch and woods behind our house. Saw snakes on occasion when we first moved int. Got 2 dogs for the kids and never saw anymore snakes in the yard.
Get a good pellet rifle and a dog you'll be fine.
Note: I'll admit it did worry me when the kids were 4 and 6.

Thanks for the advice. Like you, I'm more concerned about kids like my nieces and nephews playing in the backyard.
