I appreciate GR's history and could argue its among the flagship beers for LA. It's a solid American Barleywine.

I agree with this... GR is a very good barleywine, but IMO its no better than Big Foot which is on shelf 6 months out of the year.

I'm sure you realize that all of the beers you listed are barrel aged. As a matter of fact all of the top 20 English Barleywines on BA are barrel aged.

Maybe 'most craft beer drinkers' just prefer barrel aged barleywines to non-barrel aged variety. Who would have guessed...

Not to mention, ADWTD is indeed an American Barleywine.

My complaint with that one is a similar I have for a lot of barleywines, too damn boozy and sweet for my tastes.

Kuhnhenn offers a non- BA Barelywine as well. I believe it too is an American style. But I think there's little doubt that barrel aging simultaneously adds character to Barleywines while providing time for the sharpness to wear down. Again, it's not my favorite style but if I'm gonna do one its going to be bigger and more bold than GR.

I'll take a MOAS with two years on it and call it a night.

I'd also be curious to know how many of the top rated Barleywines are bottle conditioned as GR is (at least was, assume it still is).
