Delinquent Car Liability Insuance

My parents received a notice from the state of Louisiana yesterday saying that I owed $1,300 for failure to maintain minimum liability car insurance in Louisiana for the past 1.5 years. The thing is I have lived in another state for 4 years. Has anyone ever had an issue with this before?

In Louisiana when I lived in the state. For 4 years, my cars have been registered in Texas.

IF the registration was not cancelled and plates turned in when you swapped the info to another state then you owe them. Had this happen to my brother when he moved to another state, he got his first notice after 3 months though $350+ if I remember correctly. He had to pay, because it is your responsibility to turn it in and cancel it. Sucks, but unfortunately that is the law.

When u drop insurance, if u don't turn in the license plate they'll stick it to u. Cost me $450 once on a 71 Bronco

I did mail the plates to them.

My son got one today from 10 years ago. He has lived in Texas for 11 years. Problem was that I sent in the documents they requested 10 years ago but no longer have copies. Ten years is a long time to keep paperwork on something that I thought was over. I suspect this is some sort of scam, but should find out more soon.

I got burned for $525 bc the new insurance company turned in the wrong vin number to the state. It was either pay or not have a valid Louisiana license.

So I will probably have to fork over 1300 for this? does anyone know where it states that you have to notify the state of Louisiana that you have moved and registered in another state?

Yeah I got a notice too. It was on a car I sold 3-4 years ago. Not sure but it's the first notice I've ever gotten about it. I will probably call tomorrow and bitch because I'm not sure where the discrepancy is. I've carried insurance on every vehicle I've owned and I've turned in every plate.

If you had insurance, and this is just about not turning in the plate, just tell them you did. They can't prove you didn't. If you are telling the truth about registering it in Texas, take that with you when you tell them you turned in the plate.
I had a car in my name that was totaled. It was sold to a scrapyard. I never turned in the plate. I received a letter like that about a yr and a half later. I went in and told them I turned it in. There was no legal way they could prove I didn't, and the fine was dropped.
