it's good common sense though -- especially given what we know about our own society.

it would be pretty incredible if we discovered a type II civilization though. and terrifying.

What's interesting about the Great Filter/Fermi Paradox is that it's strictly a logical exercise. Of course there are things we don't know, the problem with not knowing is not be able to compute or comprehend. The only way to predict at this point is to take what we know and mix it with logical conclusions. That doesn't paint THE picture, but it paints a possible picture.

You have to appreciate that exercise, or offer an alternative that is as plausible which has some logical backing or proof to it.
