Retirement has clearly been on his mind for a while now going back to preseason when he slipped up stating the case and then had to cover so it didn't sway recruits. I felt a bit sorry for him in his post game interview. He looked like he had just had sex with Caitlyn Jenner on a drunken night and just realized it.

There comes a point in one's latter years that there are things that they just don't have the zest for their job anymore. For some they plan for it. For others, it hits them like a ton of bricks and they realize that it is time to go.
Spurrier was probably hoping against hope that he could have one more season, that it would be a good one and he could go out thereafter. It probably became apparent to him, that wasn't going to happen. Like others, he probably stepped back and looked at the big picture and decided it was time to go. By going now, it gives SC time to start looking for another coach.
As for Spurrier himself, as others have said, he has more than paid his dues. He deserves to retire in peace and I wish him nothing but the best in his future life.
