It honestly blows my mind that we have people who will take Jurgen's side on this when he's done everything to take the blame off of his shoulder, somehow blaming the refs and fans for the loss against Jamaica, blaming Bedoya for not being a defensive mid and now blaming our best player who had been out injured and was only recently back for pulling himself out of the game after playing 111 minutes.

Fabian Johnson is usually the guy most screwed over by our tactics. He's repeatedly had to play fullback and outside mid at the same time. He consistently grades out as our best player, never bitches about the workload being put on him and all of a sudden he's the villain?

Give me a break, Fabian Johnson is a starter for a Champions League squad, he doesn't need Jürgen's bullshite. I wouldn't blame him if he told Sunil and his butt buddy to go frick themselves.

Klinsmann got his tactics all wrong again and the only plan he had in extra time was to sub on a midget keeper for penalties. Good fricking work, guy. It pisses me off that so many people fail to see his faults because he's German. He has the tactical maturity of a 15 year old who cites his FIFA manager mode.

I'm pretty sure Fab hasn't started, let alone even played in any of Borussia Monchengladbach's UCL matches this year. I know he definitely didn't play against City.

Was he just hurt?

But this is a classic tactic. It's only happened a handful of times in tournament football, but it's a classic tactic. It's super common for your best goalkeeper to not be your best penalty saver. It's a classic tactic. Play for penalties against your superior opponent who surely won't score during open play. Then sub in your GK despite the fact you had two absolutely knackered players in regular time who could have been substituted.

LINK

Preliminary research indicates that it hasn't happened all that often. The fact that this article from ten years ago can point to only a handful of instances is indicative of its rarity.

It's an absolutely silly thing to plan for.

I don't have anymore time to research it, but I think the Dutch example is the only time it has happened in a WC, where a keeper was substituted for the specific purpose of penalty kicks. At least it's the only time I remember from any of the past four WC's.

I'm far from a Klinsmann supporter. I think he is an awful manager. But in this situation, he is perfectly justified IMO. Fabs decided he couldn't tough it out 9 more minutes for "his country". Heck, I'd take a beating by a pro boxer for 9 minutes if I could still stand for my country.

Klinsmann playing Fabs as a fullback isn't the question. Fabs pulling himself in the 111th minute is.

None of JKs many many shortcomings mean that, while he is manager, he can't or shouldn't raise hell when one of his players undermines his authority or whatever you want to call it when a player unilaterally decides to remove himself from a game when he could continue.

I don't think you can look at this one situation and say a manager does t have a right and obligation to respond to what he claims Fabian did. If it would be the right move for a manager you like, it's the right move here too.
Fabian being a good player doesn't mean he can just do whatever he wants. Well, he can, but that doesn't make it right.
