You will remember that following Hurricane Katrina ten years ago the football game between LSU and Arizona was moved to Tempe. What impressed LSU fans the most was how the people of Tempe responded to us. From the time we arrived at the airport, signs welcomed us with “Welcome” and “Our thoughts are prayers are with you” and other kind messages. As fans approached the stadium on downtown streets, every tree was wrapped with yellow ribbons and people were lined shoulder to shoulder with handmade signs of support for the citizens of our state. At the game the stadium announcers welcomed us to great applause and then offered a silent prayer for our state’s recovery. As the buses with our players and coaches arrived at the stadium, they too were welcomed with applause and signs of support. In hotels and restaurants small signs welcomed us and, in many cases, the staff had on yellow ribbons.
The crisis in South Carolina is not on the scale of Hurricane Katrina but their devastation is real, lives have been lost, and large parts of their state remain under water. We encourage businesses in our community to pay it forward, to respond with a warm welcome and a similar showing of generous support. I know it meant a great deal to all of us who attended that special game. Please remember how we were treated ten years ago in our state’s time of great need, and consider doing something personally or on behalf of your company to show your support for their needs.
Sincerely,
Kingfish
