arnsparger left after the 1986 season and didn't hire spurrier until December of 1989. kinda doubtful he tried to screw over LSU or knew he would hire spurrier a whole 2 years later.
You can doubt whatever you want. The screwing over was not that he hired Spurrier later, or had any idea that he would. It was that he lobbied for the most inferior coach of the bunch in the process of going to be AD of a rival school, and LSU admins fell for it. Him getting Spurrier later was lagniappe.
Do you think LSU should have hired the coach Chavis recommended to replace him when he was leaving?

I used to think that Spurrier wasn't a known commodity at the time until I saw the 30 for 30 documentary about him and the one about the USFL.
After watching the Bo Rien documentary a few weeks ago and hearing that LSU also pursued Bobby Bowden at one point, it blows my mind that we didn't hire Spurrier. It also blows my mind that we weren't willing to invest in big name coaches until Nick Saban.

I don't know if you can even consider him a big name at that point, he had some success but LSU didn't initially pursue him, Sexton contacted LSU.
