His name was mentioned briefly for Michigan and Penn State jobs before, but he's a local guy from Orland Park. He's really driven the branding of NU as "Chicago's Big Ten Team" and understands what it takes for the program to be competitive within the academic constraints. Fitz could have this job for life if he wants.

Yea I know all his connections and I understand job security, but it is a little surprising he hasn't been more receptive to outside options. I mean, it's still Northwestern. There's not enough talent in the area for them to have a Baylor or TCU-like rise and then maintain that IMO.

People have different priorities. He has a university administration that's behind him, incredible job security at a top notch institution, and I'm sure he's still making a lot of money (though not like what he would make at a Michigan or Penn State). And he gets to do it at his alma mater and right by where he grew up. It would be tough to throw that all away to go to an elite program and possibly be out of a job in four years

Actually there were whispers locally he was receptive to leaving if the university didn't commit to building the new athletic complex on the lakefront. Some of the powers that be wanted the property solely used for academic purposes, but Fitz knew this would be a huge recruiting tool since Ryan Field and the rest of the football facilities are off campus.
