I spent my first 25 years in Clay/Calhoun County, Alabama, and I don't speak with an accent. Occasionally when i drink it comes out but I'm pretty sure it's intentional for the most part. It really annoys me when people talk like fricking hicks. I know they know what they sound like. Why anyone would intentionally choose to sound like a moron is beyond me.

Eh, as far as accents go, there are worse ones out there. I hate the New England and/or New Jersey accent.

It doesn't sound unintelligent (like the southern accent sometimes can) as much as it does low class and is especially unattractive from a woman. I spoke to a lady in New Jersey awhile back and nearly every sentence ended with, "Ya know what I'm sayin'?" Drove me insane.
