Yeah, it's because corporate radio plays nothing but shite and new bands don't have the same outlets to get their music known (remember how MTV with 120 minutes and Headbangers Ball used to play new bands?) The music industry has completely changed. And all of that says nothing about the quality of the music being made by those acts.

And as far as being a 'hipster', if having a very wide taste in music defines someone as a hipster, I guess I would be guilty. It would come as a real surprise to those closest to me though, as I doubt a single one of them would ever use that adjective to describe me at all.

I also love old school country, 60s and 70s soul music, blues from any era, a little bit of jazz (Duke Ellington, Gershwin), classical (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc), old school rap and the stuff they play on KLSU. The list of shite I like is a lot longer than the list of stuff I don't. I can listen to Ray Charles one second and Slayer the next. About the only thing not on the list is Pop/Bro-country, top 40, and the mass-marketed shite they pass off as rap today.

I can't disagree with you, there.

Me, too. We're not that far apart, other than the fact I'm just not that impressed with any newer bands.
