I'll chime in on this issue, and i have to say that the statement is sad enough so true. i work in an operating room at a trauma one med center and if you spent 2 weeks with me during the summer you would never think of buying an ATV for a loved one.
Man i rode the shite out of 3 wheelers and 4 wheelers when i was a young'n but damn its hard to see kids lose their life or limbs over these things.

In that same 2 weeks we probably wouldn't let our loved ones drive an automobile either, I am sure the number and severity of those accidents is a lot higher. If your kids have grown up around this type of equipment they understand them more than the kid that jumps on a CanAm 800 at his dad's buddies house, and dad and his buddies said "give it a whirl".
Honda 250 recon like others have suggested, great bike and he will run it into adulthood.
