If I remember correctly, I think they said it was a cost thing. The cost to get the print would force them to focus primarily on that film and push the educational films off.
They said why a few years ago somewhere when a popular movie came out. Just can't remember or find it now.
Edit: It appears that IMAX brand restricted the amount of mainstream movies that could be shown.

Not to say IMAX has NO restrictions but I know for a fact many of the big blockbuster movies are available at other IMAX facilities.
