They were the weakest characters. They were basically there to introduce us to the main plot and serve as a curious view of the action

Only one of them was needed. But she was necessary and her acting was phenomenal. Annoying to movie board badasses like us, but very good nonetheless.

She showed the obvious naiveity that still exists, even within the force and she also served the sole purpose of validating it being "by the books".

She got used pretty good. Cue the sexist anti masochonists from this movie. I'm surprised there isn't OUTRAGE!

Del Toro freaking killed it. Really like how ruthless he was as opposed to his role in Traffic. Brolin was great too, really like his renegade light hearted CIA attitude. Just an obvious action junkie. He was great in that role.

This is probably my favorite movie since No Country.

She was the audience filter. Her partner served as the staunch by the book guy, the moral compass of the movie. She was the audience's anchor to emotion and reaction to the horrors of the cartels. They both served as the naïve. The partner in particular was a good character because of his military history and being a lawyer. He knew what they were doing was far outside the bounds of the law and even he broke from his code and participated while she waffled, always seeing a deeper motive out of Brolin and Del Toro.

This nonsense about the characters is disconcerting to me. I fail to see how anyone was unnecessary. The movie was so spare that it's hard to imagine anything else being cut.
