Meeting tonight to discuss season dates, split changes and such with Larry Reynolds and the wildlife commission. Anyone other than me planning on going?

So the meeting was very informative.

1. If you don't like the season you can only blame yourself at this point there was a whopping 7 people that showed up to the meeting, amazing how many people can complain on the net but do nothing to back it up.

2. Overwhelming feedback from SE LA is to move the opening date further back than it is this year. Overwhelming support from the West zone to change it's season, East zone wants later dates.

3. The SW part of the state is overall pretty happy with an early date as the coastal zone is this year.

4. Season setting will be completely different this year. Duck season for next year will be set in December with a public comment period afterwards. No longer will the season bet set in late July/early August.

5. This year is also the year that we can change splits for the next 5 years. Seems to be a lot of differing opinion on what to do with the zones this year. Those in attendance last night felt we did NOT want to stay tied with SW LA and open early that was agreed upon 100%. Seems like the most likely option would be to put SE LA back in the East zone, however it's my opinion that it's still early to see how this will go.

6. Goose season Speck framework is open for change also this year we got more days (not near the full number allowed by the feds) nor did we get an increase in bag to 3 (also an option by the feds). Public opinion is for longer season and 3 birds the commission or at least some members of it are VERY against this, feeling in a nutshell that pressure is hurting the number of birds that are wintering in LA which is dramatically down over the last 5-10 years.

I am sure there is more but I have to go make kids lunches and will try and update when I can. Ultimately very disappointed in fellow hunters that with over a month's notice in multiple location less than 10 people showed up to comment.

I really hope people will attend and participate in the meeting. I'm told the presentation I give is informative and entertaining, but it is important that I receive some feedback on the proposed zone boundary changes.

SE Louisiana was the primary source of public comment that forced the Commission to set the season 1 week later than I proposed last season, and SE Louisiana has been the primary source of outrage when the Commission set the season 1 week earlier than I proposed this season. Consequently, 1 of the zone-boundary changes I am proposing is to move the boundary back to where it was prior to 2001, which is the Houma Navigation canal. That would put Lafourche, Jefferson, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes back in the East Zone with predictably later season dates.

I'm proposing that, but I don't necessarily think it's a good idea based on harvest data and habitat type. You might remember in 2012, I proposed putting all the coastal marsh around Lake Pontchartrain in the Coastal Zone. After all, it's the same coastal marsh and the same assemblage of birds.

So I'm looking for some feedback, positive or negative. I know there are hunters in SE Louisiana that reject the notion that the season needs to be later, just as there are hunters that strongly feel it needs to be.

At the 4 previous meetings, there has been no feedback on that particular zone-boundary change. This is the critical meeting to hear what local hunters have to say. Everyone will have an opportunity to speak, and I hope to see you there.
